We left Death Valley and headed for another kind of hellish place, this one purely made by Man. Las Vegas is gaudy, dirty, tacky and busy … all the things I crave in life. But it is cheap, and it does take us in the right direction. We found a room on the south side of the city in a casino resort.
Gambling is everywhere, so everything is a casino. The hotel is pretty nice, and the complex has movie theatres, a bowling alley, a dozen or so restaurants and bars, and of course lots and lots of gambling tables and one armed bandits.
We ended up on the 20th floor with a glorious view of the freeway, the smog, and the distant hills/mountains. We could even see our little bikes down in the lot below.
The hotel is fancy in a cheaply tacky way, but the food and beer is good and fairly inexpensive, and the room is quite comfy, so I can’t complain too much. We’ve wondered the gambling halls, and I was somewhat tempted to try my hand at blackjack, but I couldn’t find a table with a low enough minimum. Apparently my ¢25 isn’t enough for them 😉 .
We’re spending two nights here, and then heading back to the land. Ann has found us a campground on the Colorado River, in a National Park. Will be great to get out of this city, and back into a tent.
Put a dime on Voisins du Zero for me!
Las Vegas is an astonishingly popular travel destination for Yukoners. I’ve never seen the attraction of giving money away, even if the tables are felted. However, I would like to at least visit the place one day, for the same reason many folks come to the Yukon: to say that I’ve been there.
Happy Trails!
Hi Dave, you’re not missing much giving Vegas a pass. The reason we went through there was to avoid the colder temperatures via the alternate route, and for the cheap hotel room. I guess if you want a cheap get-a-way, and can avoid making voluntary donations to the corporate casino masters, then Vegas could be OK. But I would not rush back.
Hey Ann and Mike. It’s been really fun following along with your two-wheeling adventures! Oh the places you’ve seen! Happy Belated Birthday Ann, I was thinking of you on the 6th! I really appreciate the honesty given to the reporting on Las Vegas! I have never been and my desire has always been extremely low! Hopefully the roads haven’t been too dusty and you’ve managed to keep the sand out of your teeth through the desert! Safe and fun travels!
Hey Susan! Thanks for the birthday happiness you sent. And, knowing that you know what two-wheeling travelling adventures are like, I’m happy to read you’re having fun following. I’m really loving the riding and wonder how I’ll find travelling roads by other methods.
You both look out of place in Vegas.
What a great trip though!
I did feel out of place — you know it!
